The University seeks dynamic and energetic individuals who will be responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for employees, students, and visitors by performing access control duties, patrol and general guard duties, crime prevention, traffic control, and responding to alarms and emergency situations.

The incumbent reports to the Chief Security Officer and must meet the qualifications, and competencies, and be accountable for the key performance areas listed below.

Requirements

  • Matric/Grade 12
  • PSIRA Grade C
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • At least 3 years of security experience
  • Experience in a tertiary environment will be an added advantage

Key Performance Area

Perform access control duties

  • Inspect and assist all staff and students in using access cards to acquire campus access.
  • Monitor access to visitors, contractors, and non-cardholders using visitor and/or contractor access cards.
  • Perform physical inspections of personnel, students, visitors, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Examine University and private property removal permissions.
  • Report any event or equipment failure.

Patrol and general guard duties

  • Maintain constant monitoring, inspect strategic points, and report any modifications or suspicious equipment or commodities to the Control Room.
  • Keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles and persons.
  • Report any suspicions to the Control Room Operator so that the Control Room Operator can be forewarned and take the appropriate safeguards, as well as aid by monitoring the situation via CCTV cameras.
  • Inform the Control Room of any abnormalities, damage, or potential hazards.
  • In the case of an emergency, respond promptly to lead individuals to safety and contact the Control Room for assistance.

Crime prevention

  • Maintain constant building observation, noting suspicious or potentially problematic conditions such as open or broken windows, doors, and/or burglar doors that are locked.
  • Safeguard the safety of the areas until the problem is addressed and secured.
  • Report any irregularities discovered to the Control Room, such as structural flaws and situations that may cause alarm, such as damaged fences or dark places.
  • Campus building inspections are carried out on a regular basis.

Respond to alarms and emergency situations

  • Using two-way radios, stay in constant communication with the Control Room.
  • Reply to Control Room dispatch instructions.
  • Observe, evaluate, and respond in accordance with the situation.
  • Monitor, summon reinforcements, confront, or seize the suspect.
  • Keep track of time and actions in a pocketbook.

Traffic control and reservation of VIP parking

  • Confirm that traffic flow and parking restrictions are followed on a regular basis.
  • Monitor activities and guarantee pedestrian and vehicular safety.
  • During major events, direct people to reserved parking areas.
  • Reserve VIP parking places on campus for special events.
  • Patrol parking lots and guarantee vehicle safety.
  • Take note of and report any potential problem circumstances, such as poor road markings, road signs, or an unsafe road surface.

Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting

  • Compile necessary operational reports as needed.
  • Consult and communicate with all key stakeholders.
  • Further responsibilities as given by the Line Manager
  • Contribute to SMU’s overall growth and actively improve institutional culture
