Job Description

The Academy was founded in 2000 with the goal of training previously underprivileged individuals to work as secretaries. The Services SETA has recognized the academy under registration number 12842, for the Further Education and Training Certificate: Business Administration Services qualification (SAQA ID 61595 LP35928) at NQF Level 4.

Although the course structure has altered since its inception, the goal remains to provide the finest possible training to enable these applicants to be instantly employable in any secretarial role at the completion of the training.

After passing a stringent computer, keyboarding, and linguistic skills test, only twelve candidates are chosen each year.

How do we do it?

The course lasts one year, from 1 March to 28 February the following year, including a mid-year exam and a rigorous final exam. Practical instruction is provided in all of the divisions listed below: Patents, Trade Marks, Commercial, and Conveyancing.

Typing/keyboarding skills are established throughout the first 5-6 months, along with an introduction to the legal environment and working life in general.Only those trainees who excelled in this phase will be able to progress to Phase II, which is more advanced and prepares trainees for the workplace by focusing on typing speed, advanced audio typing, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as other essential secretarial skills such as proficient note-taking, writing letters and memos, taking initiative and responsibility, and preparing all types of relevant correspondence.

The best student in the course receives an award for excelling academically and in all aspects of the training. By displaying a good attitude, this student helps to improve the image of Adams & Adams.

What is the content of the course?

Computyping (including MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint skills)
Typing speed (goal is 60 wpm),
Audio Typing
Basic Accounting
Legal Theory
Basic English – writing, reading, comprehension and advanced spelling
Written and spoken English for business purposes
Professional image and grooming
Telephone etiquette
Time management
Financial planning
Life skills
Practical training – administrative and secretarial
Business Administration Services Qualification (learnership):
Module 1: Administration processes
Module 2: Information and communication
Module 3: Work in an office
Module 4: Problem solving and admin
Module 5: Teamwork

Who should apply?

Anyone from a historically disadvantaged background who wishes to work as a secretary in the legal field, particularly in intellectual property.

Requirements

  • Between the ages of 18 and 25
  • A high school diploma with computer applications technologies;
  • A post-secondary credential in typing or keyboarding and MS Office with a minimum speed of 25 wpm
  • Writing and speaking English well is essential, and having a C-symbol (between 60% and 69%) is helpful.
  • Willingness to put in a lot of effort and study everything you can

What does it cost?

In addition to receiving a salary for taking part in the learnership, trainees receive the training at no cost to themselves. All that is necessary is a willingness to learn and the ability to function under pressure during the entire course.
